        John Couch Adams: (1819-1892)

John was a very intelligent child.  He was best known for his ability of accurate numerical calculations. During this time he became interested in astronomy and by the age of 16, he figured out when andeclipse of the sun would be visible in Lidcot.

As time went on John was labeled as an English astronomer and mathematician.  In 1841, at the age of 24, while still in Collage, he decided to investigate the strange motions of Uranus....in order to find out if an undiscovered planet was the cause of them.  And he was right.

After Johann Gottfried Galle confirmed the existence of Neptune based on calculations done by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, the two became embroiled in a dispute over priority.

Adams spent much of his time studying the complex problem of the motion of the Moon and the terrestrial magnetism.

Adams will be remembered most for his role in the co-discovery of Neptune.
